The figure link above shows some results of a coupled flow and reaction model of supercritical CO2 / H2O mixtures. This model calculates the rates of overall metamorphic reactions based on experimental kinetics. The model parameters were as follows: 0.4% initial porosity, 30% initial X_CO2, on a grid of 65 by 65 nodes (horizontal and vertical resolution). The system is 125 m by 125 m in extent and has an upper lid pressure imposed at 3 kilobars. The initial composition was imposed at 85% dolomite and 15% quartz. We considered time-dependent heating of the lower left part of the boundary, where the temperature was ramped up from 460 C at a rate of 0.1 C/yr representing initial stages of contact metamorphism. A and C: X_CO2 and flow (actual velocities for part C are much greater than in A). B and D: ending T-X_CO2 pairs for each point (x-z pairs) in the computational domain.
A and B, after 800 yrs, grain spacing 0.4 mm.
C and D, after 320 yrs. grain spacing 4 mm.
Note the dramatic influence of grain size.
Reactions 1-5, some of which are metastable, meet at a univariant point:
1) dol+qtz+H2O = talc+calcite+CO2
2) talc+calc+qtz = trem+CO2+H2O
3) talc+calc = trem+dol+CO2+H2O
4) dol+qtz+H2O = trem+calc+CO2
5) talc+dol+qtz = tremolite+CO2
